Reading this series
This series splits mean monthly employee earnings by economic activity, using ISIC Rev. 4 sections. It is ILOSTAT indicator EAR_EMTA_SEX_ECO_CUR_NB, both sexes, annual, in 2021 PPP dollars. Values are gross employee pay, not take-home pay, and cover employees only. On a country desk the page shows that economy’s own sections; on the all-countries page each industry’s reading is the median of the published national means for that year, which is a comparison device and not an official world figure.
Earnings differ between industries because of hours, qualifications, bargaining coverage and the mix of occupations, not only pay rates. Small sections can rest on small samples and move sharply. The chart and table follow one section over time; the range buttons shorten the window. National definitions of an industry and of an employee vary, so treat cross-country gaps as indicative. The ILO revises series, so values can change at the next rebuild. Read the year labels; sections do not all update together.
